Planning and Design

Container Terminals

Royal Haskoning has been involved in the planning and design of container terminals since the start of international container traffic movements, having designed the first purpose built terminal in the United Kingdom, at the Port of Felixstowe. This was opened in 1967 and since then the firm has been responsible for the planning and design of all major expansions of the port, which has been transformed from a minor coastal port into the largest and most efficient container port in the UK.

Close association with the development of a port recognised as being one of the leaders of technological development in container handling has provided the firm with extensive knowledge of container operations and handling equipment of all types. Working in co-operation with port operations managers, the most efficient and flexible layouts have been developed.

Furthermore, this understanding of the port's requirements has enabled the firm to design the most economic of a large number of quay walls reviewed in an independent study carried out worldwide by the American Society of Engineers. Subsequent quay designs have proved equally competitive. Cost effective designs have also been developed for other aspects of port construction, notably land reclamation over soft sediments and heavy duty pavements.

Royal Haskoning has become one of the leading designers of container terminals in the world with world leading computer simulation techniques for the optimisation of throughput levels.
